Using Your Vehicle's Tire Pressure Monitoring System

Every Honda is now equipped with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) to alert the driver of significantly low tire pressure in one or more of the tires. Additionally, visually inspecting your tires for excessive wear or damage and keeping them properly inflated is important for your safety and fuel efficiency.
TPMS has two warning indicators within your gauge cluster: a Low Pressure Indicator, and a "TPMS" indicator.

When the Low Pressure Indicator comes on it means one of more of your tires is under inflated by more than 20% of the recommended pressure level. Once the Low Pressure Indicator comes on, take action as soon as possible!

Why is proper tire inflation important?

Keeping your tires at the recommended pressure (as indicated in your Owner's Manual and on the driver's door frame) is essential for the safe, efficiency operation of your Honda. Safety experts estimate that 25 percent of automobiles are running on tires with lower than recommended pressure. Dry and wet handling performance suffers with under-inflated tires. Under-inflated tires can lead to skidding and/or loss of control of your vehicle, hydroplaning on a wet surface, and blowouts caused by severe overheating. Properly inflated tires run cooler, last longer and have less rolling resistance, which helps maintain fuel economy.

Why does tire pressure change?

There are several reasons why tire pressure may change:
- Tire damage
- Slow leaks
- Changes in outside temperature. For every drop of 10 degrees Fahrenheit in temperature, your tires lose 1 psi of pressure.
- Tires also deflate naturally over time, as much as 1.5 psi per month. This time-frame can accelerate if there are heavy items in the trunk.

The Tire Pressure Monitoring System on your Honda is a tool to keep you informed about your tire pressure by using sophisticated sensors to continually monitor the pressure within each tire. The Low Pressure Indicator will illuminate when a tire is 20 percent or more below the recommended pressure.

How soon do I need to check my tires when the light goes on?

As soon as it is safe to do so, check your tires and take the appropriate action. Having properly inflated tires is important to your safety and your vehicle's fuel economy.

What does the TPMS Indicator mean?

Your Honda also includes a separate indicator regarding the status of the TKPMS system itself. If the letters "TPMS" illuminate within the gauge cluster, it means that the Tire Pressure Monitoring System has a fault and the system may no longer be monitoring the tire pressures. A dealer visit is required.

What else should I do to ensure tire safety?

There is no substitute for regularly inspecting your tires-do not wait for a warning light before checking your tires. Review your Owner's Manual thoroughly to educate yourself on what to look for when inspecting your tires. You should check tire pressure at least once a month and before going on long trips. Recommended tire pressure is listed on the tire label, located on the driver's door frame, sill, or edge, and if your Owner's Manual. Do not use the tire pressures listed on the tire. Since the temperature affects tire pressure, it is best to check tires when they are cold, i.e., when they haven't been driven on for at least three hours.
If you have any questions about your tires or other maintenance issues, check your Owner's Manual or consult with your Honda dealer's service department.
What to do when your Low Pressure Indicator comes on:
- Stop and check your tires as soon as it is safe to do so
- If a tire is flat, or the pressure is too low to continue driving, replace the tire with the provided spare or call for roadside assistance. Note; TPMS does not monitor spare tire pressure. Make sure to inspect your spare before using.
- If you can safely drive a short distance to the nearest service station, proceed cautiously.
- Inflate all tires to the recommended pressure, as indicated on the driver's doorjam. The Low Pressure Indicator may remain on until the car is driven a short distance.
If the Low Pressure Indicator remains on after setting all the tires to the recommended pressure, there may be a tire with a slow leak. Determine if the same tire is repeatedly low and get it inspected and repaired as needed.
